Coffee + Snow

U.N.I.T.Y

After dolling up and heading to Notting Hill Carnival. I became curious about a piece of writing I felt compelled to write before my transition started. It concerned the music that resonated in my heart and soul but whose culture I always felt so distant from.

I heard people with a real voice talking of heart ache, struggle and the courage to be themselves. I started to think about the universal nature of struggle and rather than look for division to instead look for unity.

I am an outsider to the culture of the music I listen to, to the lives I live in my daydreams. I’m kept at arms reach from all that resonates with me. Only left with the memories of my mistakes and reminded that I am not wanted as I am by ignorant voices.

I make mistakes in all my decisions it seems, and I feel like I walk on egg shells through life. I worry about upsetting a careful balance and offending someone, but I need the space to make those mistakes so fragile is my sense of self, so repressed are my feelings and emotions, so timid is my true self.

While I search for my voice, I am left to embrace that which resonates with me. So much of my musical aesthetic appreciation comes from black music. I wonder if I can one day stop worrying about what that culture thinks of me and start to speak my mind with a voice as powerful and resonant.

Southwark LGBT History Month

LGBT? Do you live, work or study in Southwark, London?

My amazing gay friend Dan has an awesome time sensitive project about Southwark’s (London, UK) LGBT youth.

He is having trouble finding Transgender, Genderqueer and also Lesbian youth to take part. Filming and interviews are taking place in London in the next few days.

______________________________

I’m making a film for Southwark’s LGBT History Month and it’s about celebrating the heroes / role models of young LGBT people.

This is a great opportunity to voice your thoughts on the heroes and role-models who’ve influenced you.

We want to make sure the full spectrum of LGBT young voices is being heard in Southwark. The heroes you choose may or may not be members of the LGBT community themselves - the aim of our film is to showcase the wide variety of people who influence our lives and celebrate the positive impact they’ve had.

The filming is really relaxed - it involves about an hour chatting and then 5 or 10 minutes with a camera.

The launch event is next Tuesday (1st Feb 2011) in the evening so it’s a tight deadline.

Issue one of Spandex came through the letter box today. Props to Martin Eden for prompt posting and even a signed compliment slip. Heard Martin talk about his LGBT superhero comic on Resonance 104.4FM the other day and decided to give it a chance, only £3 within the UK.
It looks like the beginnings of a cute comic, might even buy issues #2 and #3 when I have some money to spend. Was still hankering for something grittier and dirtier though. But I guess I should just concentrate on writing my novel which should have enough filth and grit to satisfy most of those that are inclined and disgust the rest of the world.
